The Best Breakfast Burritos in Shanghai

Shanghai’s best breakfast burritos come with eggs, bacon and all the trimmings. We tried eight breakfast burritos and tried our best to rank them by best value and taste. Here’s a list for your brunch/breakfast noshing.

KABB

This neat, medium-sized breakfast burrito (RMB60) is stuffed with fluffy scrambled eggs, white sausage, sautéed bell peppers, beans and onions, and then topped with baked mozzarella cheese, sour cream and tomato salsa. You can upgrade it to two burritos for an additional RMB20. The order comes with coffee or tea (both with one free refill) or a soft drink. Available at all KABB locations on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-4pm—but we recommend KABB at iapm mall. The iapm location has an outdoor seating area in a quiet atrium in the center of the mall. It’s noise-free and family-friendly.

Munchies

Munchies carries a few favorites on their all-day breakfast menu, but we believe the hefty Breakfast Burrito (RMB43) is the main attraction. Tightly wrapped around fluffy scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, mildly spicy jalapeño salsa and a thin layer of refried beans and sour cream, this toasted burrito makes up in flavor for whatever it may lack in presentation. It comes with a side of country potatoes. This great value option also comes with a cup of coffee or tea. Available all day, every day.

Mayita

Maya/Mayita’s popular breakfast burrito (RMB65) is a solid wrap packed with egg, refried beans, roasted potatoes, bell peppers, chorizo, a thin layer of guacamole and cheddar cheese and topped with sour cream. The eggs weren’t as fluffy as we’d like and we weren’t fans of the intentionally smoky refried beans. The girth of the burrito made it difficult to eat with our hands. The tasty burrito had a good consistency and the ingredients were uniformly spread, however, it was slightly greasy. Drinks not included. It’s accompanied with a mildly spicy salsa. It’s available at Maya and Mayita, but we recommend Mayita for the rooftop terrace.

Sumerian

The densely wrapped breakfast burrito/Mexican Wrap (RMB40) at Sumerian is loaded with crunchy peppers, mushy beans, stringy mozzarella, a good amount of bacon and two eggs (that we assume were cooked in egg rings due to its shape). It’s toasted and holds well, but lacks seasoning apart from the layers of salty bacon—a little Tabasco goes a long way. Our one gripe is that when we placed the order, staff didn’t mention the wait time. Service on the wrap was slow for the half-full café, but we realized it was a specialty item and forgave the wait.

Pistolera

The Burrito Norteno (RMB80) at Pistolera is a huge portion. It’s filled with chorizo, scrambled eggs, cheese and Mexican rice. It also comes with pico de gallo salsa and refried beans on the side. For some reason, they opted to pair this brunch dish with a bowl of fruit instead of coffee or tea—drinks not included. The eggs weren’t fluffy, making it a very dense and filling wrap. The wrap under-seasoned and dry but we smeared some refried beans over each bite to rectify it. For the portion, we’d give it good value, but taste, not so much. Be prepared for Top 40 tunes blaring at the venue. Available at all Pistolera venues on Saturday and Sunday.

Jalapeño

Jalapeño’s massive Breakfast Burrito Grande (RMB78) comes loaded with scrambled eggs, guacamole and generous slices of avocado and bacon, which can be swapped out for chorizo at no added cost. The burrito is cut in half and served in an iron skillet with roasted tomatoes on the vine. The burrito does lack flavor, but Cholula and BYFO hot sauce on the table were more than enough. This power brunch also comes with one side (we had the tasty baked cheese and egg avocado), free-flow corn chips and salsa. Make it a party with bottomless margaritas for an additional RMB128. Available Saturday and Sunday.
